More on Mercedes

Some of the team have already posted thoughts and pictures of their tour of Mercedes today so I just wanted to add a couple of other perspectives.
One of the most striking things about Latin America, for those who come from North Anerica, is the lack of distinction between church and state. One of the team already commented on this but it is so evident in our visit to the Municipal building today where a statue of Mary sat on the main staircase leading  to the ceremonial rooms. In this area you see such statues in all sorts of places - hotels, museums and general stores. It is striking for us from the USA. Here here a picture of the Virgin of Luhan, the patroness of this region, sitting on the main staircase of the town hall in Mercedes.

But it must be said that the building itself was lovely and these are the original courtrooms in the building. It certainly rivals anything in York.

And finally we once again got to meet with the Mayor of the city. Unfortunately because of the very heavy rains of the past few weeks and the problems they have caused, he was not able to spend an extended period of time with us. Nevertheless we were grateful for the opportunity to meet the Mayor who is pictured here with both American and German teams.
